I don't remember what this original tape was but it was great fun recreating its wrap around design, rather than the usual simple card insert. I have made a limited run of 6 tapes dubbed onto original early 80’s C120 cassettes to be as close to the original as possible.

I began making and recording music in 1988 when I was 13. By 1993 I decided to piece together the best of what I had recorded so far into one collection. The Dephne Oram Experience was the first of a series of coming 'best of's'.

Named after the legendary Radiophonic Work shop and experimental pre Synth Pioneer, perhaps I was setting myself up a fall here - my nascent ramshackle progy synth jams do not even slightly resemble Oram's pioneering minimal tape and oscillator work. But I’d just bought a 7” from a car boot sale: Electronic Sound Patterns and I was in love, I had no idea who she was at the time or her importance to the history of electronic music. My photocopies from the 7” photos made it onto the cover, surrounded by a bad Jimi Hendrix style font and an Ozric Tentacles rainbow of colour, it’s quite a combination.

The tapes comprising this collection were mostly recorded using separate, simultaneously playing and also recording boomboxes through condenser mic. You get hiss, relative instrument volume level issues and plenty of wayward tuning. The original C120 (that’s 60 mins each side!) tape has been digitised and remastered in Cubase – keeping the original noises and general messiness, but levelling out the track volumes somewhat. There has also been some tape degradation over the years and so elements of these recordings have not fared well but this is as close to my original as possible.

I have decided to recreate these compilation tapes as limited editions, including printed recreations of the original artwork.
